St. Joseph High School's anatomy class recently began the study of skeletal systems. Their initial interest in the subject can literally be "chalked up" to an outdoor assignment. Class members were asked to draw full skeletons on the school's surrounding pavement with colored chalk. "It was a fun way to introduce bones," teacher Abigail Barker said. "It was a great way to familiarize them with bone names and locations. It also created teamwork and creativity which can improve long term memory of new information."
When the students return from Fall Break, they'll be learning about the types of bone cells and how bones are formed as well as their classifications and functions. They'll also study bone diseases and deformities. "By the end of the chapter, each student will be able to identify every bone in the body," Ms. Barker said.
