St. Joseph Kindergarten classes wrapped up their bug unit last week with special guests, Mr. and Mrs. Manion (Arlo’s mom and dad). They brought their bees and some equipment that they use for bee keeping.
"During the visit a few bees actually hatched and the kids all got to see it up close as it was occurring. It was amazing to see. A huge thanks to Arlo and his family for enriching our learning!" comments Mrs. Hefley, SJES Kindergarten teacher.

St. Joseph High School Spanish Teacher, Mrs. Carina Martinez, tells us all about their latest field trip to Faby's Restaurant in Conway!
"On April 9th, over 40 students from Spanish I and II classes went on a field trip to Faby's Mexican Restaurant in downtown Conway. This field trip gave students an opportunity to practice what they have learned throughout the school year. In most cultures, food tells a story about their heritage. The field trip began the moment students got on the bus at the school. Part of the criteria for attending the field trip is that students are encouraged to speak Spanish among themselves and with the staff at Faby's. But most importantly, they are to place their orders in Spanish. This is the second year I have taken a group of students to Faby's, and it's always a blast. For many of the Spanish II students, this is their second time attending this field trip. A proud moment for me as a teacher to see their growth.
So why go to Faby's out of all the Mexican restaurants in Conway? Not only are the owners part of St. Joseph Parish, but their food and atmosphere feels authentic. Every customer that works through their doors is treated like family. Food and family is a big part of Hispanic culture. As a teacher, taking students out of the classroom and into our community helps them practice their skills and exposes them to Hispanic culture."
What a great experience for our SJHS students! Thank you, Mrs. Martinez!

St. Joseph Kindergarten students are making an impact in the community with a Lenten service project--Birthday Boxes! Kindergarteners collected and filled 39 cake boxes with cake mixes, candles, and all sorts of birthday fun! The boxes were then donated to Soul Food Cafe Missions for distribution. "Today, when I spoke to our contact at Soul Food Cafe Missions, she was almost moved to tears by the generosity of '5 and 6 year olds,' as she called them. She was blown away! She told me there were numerous times that people come in for food help and they will mention their child has an upcoming birthday would there be anything special the mission had for that. Now they will have 39 boxes that they can say yes and give to these families!" comments Mrs. Hefley, Kindergarten Teacher. Thank you to our kindergartners, Mrs. Strack and Mrs. Hefley for your giving hearts this Lenten season!

On Thursday, the kindergarten classes had the best time when Mr. Ben Thrash, Addie’s dad, came to talk about bugs! Mr. Thrash is the Associate Professor of Entomology/Extension for the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service, which means he knows ALL the things about bugs. He brought a slideshow with pictures of all sorts of insects and bug families. "The students got to look at his 'bug boxes' and ask so many questions. We ended with a bug story! It was the best way to enrich our bug unit with hands on learning," commented Mrs. Hefley. Thank you, Mr. Thrash for visiting our kindergarten classes!
